A little poker (3/45)

I had some time tonight to fire up good 'old FTP and see if I can start rebuilding my measly bankroll. I only had about a buck and a half so I found a 45-peep SNG that was about to start and hopped right in. I was the chip-leader for most of the tournament but right before the final table I got hit by my first 3-outer beat. Then at the FT I couldn't get anything going and had to sit on my hands for a while.

All of a sudden we were down to 5 (6 spots paying) and I barely had any chips left. I started jamming and stealing the blinds. Then one of the other shorties decided to call me with weaker aces than mine and we ended up chopping two consecutive pots when the board double paired and then once again when the board paired and came all high. I eventually took him out with 33 when he shoved with KTo.

Down to three and I was still the shortie and started shoving whenever I had something decent. Big stack eventually called my A2o SB shove with A6o and I was done:

So, my short foray back into poker-dome went better than expected. I turned my $1.25 into $7.20 which is a not too shabby ROI of 476%. And it took just under 2 hours to complete. Time well spent.

Not so tough now, are you?

I remember when Tekken 3 came out and they had the idiot doing Capoeira. I always hated him and would crush him with ease. So I was delighted to find this:

Been a while

You know it's been a while since you last played poker when you try to log in to Stars and FTP and both ask you to download new versions of their software. Hmmm, maybe they also changed the doom switch software and will actually let me win against a 2-outer? We'll see.

Here's something cool you can do with genealogy:

And seriously?

Dealer: Re-buy period is closed

Company Policy

Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all the monkeys with cold water. After awhile, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result -- all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, replace another one of the original monkeys with a new one, then a fourth, then a fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they are not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beatings of the newest monkey. After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as he knows that's the way it's always been done around here.......

And that's how company policy begins.

Blurb

I just had to pass this on.

I found a cool site/app that can create and publish a book from your blog. It has a lot of functionality as far as layouts and editing, but the main point is that it will 'slurp' up your blog and create a book for you in a few minutes (depending on the size of your blog). It's free to download and mess around with. You only have to pay if you want to publish, and prices start at $12.95 and up.

Check it out: Blurb.com

I totally forgot

No, I'm not talking about totally forgetting about Dr. Pauly's AWESOME 5th blog anniversary poker tournament on PokerStars on Tuesday night. I remembered it and almost registered. I would have won it too, cause I'm a winner, you know.

No, I forgot to tell you, kind and gentle readers, about my awesome golf day last weekend. Buddy from the neighborhood had a couple of open spots in a foursome at Woodmont and after several times of saying no, I finally said yes. So we headed out mid-day on Saturday to a course I have never played before, with people I have never played with before. Whatever could go wrong?

I used to play a lot up until a few years ago when KajaKid took over my weekend schedule. I used to be a complete golf addict, including 3-4 magazine subscriptions, all kinds of gadgets, a golf blog, local amateur tours and watching PGA tournaments on TV almost every weekend. By the way - boooooooorrrrrrriiiiiinnnnggggg. I say that now with some perspective.

Anyway, I still love to play, except I am not as good as I used to be and I don't really care as much as I used to. I have come to terms with the fact that I won't hit the ball or putt as well as I used to. I am actually going to come out and say that 18 holes might be too long for me and the current state of my game right now.

But I was going to have a blast. I started out with two pars (whaaaaa????) and I would have parred the next couple of holes if it wasn't for my poor putting ability (3-putts suck). But then the real roller-coaster started. I kind of stunk up the next couple of holes, even picking up my ball on the 7 hole. Then we get to a tough par-4, 450 yards and what do I do? I par it. In style, too. 320 yard drive, followed by a soft pitching wedge, a 50-foot double-break putt and the eventual tap-in for par. There's nothing to this game. Golf claps.

These are the kinds of holes that when you play, you just know you can beat this game. I once heard a quote describing golf as an obsession with frustration. So, so true.

Cobra Golf Ad - "Frustration""

The back-9 was a completely different story. The holes were a lot harder, with forced carries over brush and water, island greens and general confidence devastation. I see-sawed the entire time, going from 3 over, to par, to 3 over and so on. I hit some amazing shots and I duffed it up as well. By the time we reached the home hole I was pretty much kaput.

But I got to go out and play golf on a sunny day, on a beautiful course, with some nice people. What more could I ask for? My dad to be there beside me.

I can't wait till my dad comes for a visit in a few months. We will be making the drive up to Woodmont to play a round, for sure. He's the real golf nut in the family. He plays 3-5 times a week with his regular group. They take golf trips a few times a year to places like South Africa and Turkey. And their home course is currently the only active golf course in Israel - a tiny, 9-hole crappy layout that has double tee boxes and several double greens. They used to play on a decent 18-hole dunes-style course in Caesaria that has been shut down for renovation and to make room for course-side real estate development. It will be closed for about 2 years, but they will eventually get a great Pete Dye designed course. But for now they're playing what in the USA would be considered a cheap muni.

Talk about dedication. Come on dad, I'm waiting!

Live Poker Radio Tour recap

KajaWife headed to bed early tonight so I decided to hop back into some poker bloggament goodness and play the inaugural LPRT.

Here's are the highlights and lowlights in screen shot format since I am too lazy to narrate much tonight:

1) I start out playing tight so I fold A9o UTG and see this:

2) Here I open to 3xBB get a flt and a raise, so I fold with discipline and see this happen:

3) I had been raising a lot and still got no action on my aces:

4) I tried to run a stop & go and this is what happened:

5) Here I just went with my read on the turn that I had a ton of outs and I was right:

6) This one was funny. Evy sees the flop, asks if he should check his quads and does. I say that I will min-bet my quads and do. He asks if 8 high is good and folds. So obviously I tell him I had 6 high:

7) I sit around fro a while and then stealy-Hoy goes for my blinds so I shove with AQo and he folds. A few hands later he raises again and I shove with Jacks knowing full well he is going to call and he does. But I run so good:

Thanks to Instant Tragedy for setting this up. And thanks for the PS$ to FTP$ trade. A lot of good that did me :-)

I host - I lost

I love hosting poker night at my place. I love my cards. I love my chips set. I love my speed felt. I love my chairs.

I hate always busting out first though. Should I keep hosting? Maybe I should sit out the first few levels?

Anyway, we ended up with 15 after a couple of no-shows and then Eric decided to sit this one out for some reason. So we had a deep stack 7 per table start. Weak took it down in about 4 hours, follow by Andres, Tim and Mrs. Surf. I think she's 2 for 2 in our hood game.

It's late and I am going to bed. I get to play golf tomorrow!!!

A Poker Post? Surely, you must be kidding...

I'm not kidding. And don't call me Shirley.

I am hosting monthly hood poker night and have 17 people attending! Almost half the peeps are bloggers, so I could say this is almost a semi-official APBT sanctioned event:

Kaja - of course!
Weak - back flush with WSOP-donkey cash from Vegas.
BrainMc - coming by to collect his monthly allowance.
Special K's friend - Surf vouched for him, so if you never hear from me again, you know where to look.
Surf + Mrs. Surf - I think I am going to refer to these two as Surf & Turf from now on. Just for fun.

Well, not as many as I thought originally, but still a good size crowd. I am thinking big game again, but we'll just gauge it later when everyone shows up.

Updates to come.

PS: I would be remiss if I didn't not mention another PoBlo icon has seen its final days. The MATH is no more. I it's place is the newly founded Live Poker Radio Tour. Check out the details:
